recteq Running Too Cool/Not Getting Hot:

Long Heat Up Times:

If you are new to pellet grilling, there may be an adjustment period when it comes to start-up times. Keep in mind that pellet grills must start, nurture, and precisely control a live wood-fire. Startup and achieving precise temperatures may take 20-30 minutes in some cases.  However, there are several things that may cause your recteq to start and climb slower than intended. If you feel your recteq is taking longer than it should, here are some possible reasons why:

1. Air Flow – Proper air flow is one of the single most important factors in achieving high temperatures.

      • Ensure all areas of ventilation are clear of obstruction
      • Avoid using gasketing tape on the lid
      • Clean the firepot regularly to keep air-holes clear
      • If using foil, make sure the foil is not hanging over air channels
      • Do not extend or modify areas of ventilation
      • Ensure that the RTD probe is not touching the wall.
      • Make certain that if you are using a Sear Kit, that you are using it on the right-hand side of the grill. Using it on the left will cause interference with the RTD.

2. Pellets – Using the right pellet is just as important as air flow. Pellet quality as well as how they are stored, and their age play a huge role in making sure that you are getting to temperatures on time.

      • Make sure your pellets are no longer than one and a half inches. ½"-¾" is considered optimal
      • Ensure that the bag is not dusty and broken down
      • Look for a bright sheen on the outside of the pellet
      • Avoid using pellets that are older than 6 months
      • Use only Food Grade, 100% Premium Hardwood Pellets
      • Avoid wood blends that include Alder, Mesquite, and Charcoal
      • Always store pellets properly before use [ see link to pellet storage]

3. Proper Maintenance

      • Clean your firepot often to keep the air-holes clear
      • Let your hopper run empty after 5-6 bags. Dust can settle at the bottom of the hopper and keep your grill from feeding a steady stream of pellets.
      • Clean the lip of lid and all other areas of ventilation. Remember, air’s ability to escape is crucial to high and consistent temperatures.

4. Weather – Even a perfect balance of air and pellets can’t account for extreme weather conditions. While the recteq can and will maintain excellent temperatures in even the coldest weather, it will take a little longer, and be a little more difficult in the cooler months to come up to temp. Here are a couple things to keep in mind:

      • The recteq contains a large amount of heavy stainless steel. In cold weather that steel will take some time to warm up, causing slower startup.
      • The grill must constantly fight against the cold outside air. Especially in windy, snowy conditions.

Remember, your recteq is an extremely efficient machine. Starting 15-20 minutes earlier than you anticipated will not cause any significant loss through pellet consumption. Avoid setting the grill to a higher temp than your desired set-point to cheat out a faster start. Rapidly lowering the temp and opening the lid will cause severe temperature swings.

My Grill Will Not Reach 500/Full:

Reaching maximum temperatures typically comes down to two major factors: fuel and air. If your recteq is successfully running past 300° then we can be certain that all your components are properly functioning:

1. Air Flow – Proper air flow is one of the single most important factors in achieving high temperatures.

      • Ensure all areas of ventilation are clear of obstruction
      • Avoid using gasketing tape on the lid
